Having participated in a number of “kickabouts” in various locations, we noticed that although they were just friendly kickabouts, they certainly weren’t all that friendly, and instead were somewhat competitive and offered no form of encouragement. These kickabouts also catered only for men and required participants to have a fair amount of skill and fitness. So, Carterton Social FC was officially launched and kicked off in February 2020… Yes, just before the first Covid Lockdown. The timing couldn’t have been worse. We first used to meet on the RAF Brize Norton astro, but that proved to be logistically challenging, in that we needed to ensure everyone arrived on time, and that we had enough RAF members to sign guests onto the base.

So, due to the logistical challenges of the RAF astro, during the first lockdown, we had time to reassess the situation, and once restrictions started to lift, decided to start meeting on an abandoned 7/9 a side grass pitch opposite the Broadshires Health Centre. However, little did we know that our kickabout would grow so popular! The group just kept growing. Too much for the small grass pitch to accommodate.

Here we are, with almost 200 members in the group and still growing, we now meet at the Carterton ATP (Artificial Turf Pitch).
